Over the years of helping hundreds of clients heal, many have asked me about my opinions on LOA and does the law of attraction work?

Unfortunately, I have seen many clients in pain, believing that they have somehow manifested their own suffering, brought their symptoms and experiences on themselves.

People start to believe that the only solution to this is that they must think positively all the time to achieve a ‘positive vibration’. Which is simply not possible, and when we fail to manage to ‘think positively’ all the time, the result is only more shame and suffering. It also results in us further pushing down harmful emotions.

People even ask is Abraham Hicks fake or is Abraham Hicks a cult? While I’m not here to speculate on that, I will share my own experiences with the pitfalls of the Law of Attraction as well as the difference in my healing approach with clients.

“If you knew your potential to feel good, you would ask no one to be different so that you can feel good. You would free yourself of all of that cumbersome impossibility of needing to control the world, or control your mate, or control your child. You are the only one who creates your reality.” ― Abraham Hicks

On the surface, this sounds great – it is entirely true that you cannot (and shouldn’t try to) control others. But when you look deeper into this, there is a message that you must accept and take responsibility with what is presented to you, even if it has nothing to do with you. It disregards your feelings and emotional response to situations.

If you believe that you are creating your reality with your thoughts, there’s a good chance you spend time feeling bad about yourself.

How Law of Attraction and Core Emotional Healing® Differ

When someone doesn’t treat you with respect, you didn’t attract that, but you can do something about it. You can tell them how you feel, stop seeing them, etc. The Law of Attraction (LOA) says you attracted disrespect because of your vibration, and you can change your vibration by changing your thoughts and words. This can potentially leave you with feelings of self-blame, and that if only you didn’t think or feel or expect what happened, it wouldn’t have.

The Pitfalls of Law Of Attraction:

  1. Does not sufficiently take into account external reality that is out of our control
  2. Overemphasizes personal magical control
  3. Does not address the unconscious and deeper emotional causes of what we attract

Core Emotional Healing® (CEH) says you didn’t attract it simply by thinking or expecting it, some people are just disrespectful at times. But if you are allowing it and/or repeatedly experiencing it, it’s probably because you haven’t learned how to take care of your emotional needs, and you have more to heal from your childhood in order to say no and walk away from unsupportive relationships.

So, by applying the magical processes of LOA, you can overlook what is actually causing your issues and sidestep the valuable lessons that will actually shift your reality, including vibrationally. If that deeper emotional level is fueling the problem, all the wishing and thought changing is not going to work or at least will be a constant uphill battle.

Sometimes, we can want something so badly, but no matter how much we try to think it into existence, no matter how many affirmations we recite, or how many vision boards we create ⸺ it escapes us. But it’s not because we didn’t believe deeply enough, it just may not be in the cards.

Here’s a perfect example of how “divine timing” can work…

In April 2019, my husband, Doug, and I put an offer on our dream house in Costa Rica. We were supposed to close at the end of June and we couldn’t have been happier.

We were ready for a smooth transition to the life we had been dreaming about for years.

But what followed was a whole lot of frustration and trouble with the existing renters of the house who refused to leave. The renters were taking advantage of a Costa Rican law that would allow them to stay in the house. They ended up dragging it out for 6 months and extorted money from the owner, a 76-year-old widow, as a condition of their leaving.

LOA would say that this experience was our fault because of our vibration.

Did we attract these tragedies and obstacles in our life?

No, life had other plans for us.

And when things were finally settled, did that magically happen because we changed our vibration?

Again, no.

We fought hard for our right to this house, pushed the realtor to take care of us in the deal, we stood up for ourselves, and made it all happen. If we didn’t do all of that, we could have been screwed either with inheriting the renters or not getting the house, both of which almost happened!

We fought for ourselves and made it happen because (through CEH) we both know how to take care of our needs. We didn’t just think positive thoughts, it was extremely stressful, and our stress helped us take action to push the deal forward. We practiced faith, patience, and perseverance, and we closed on our house October 25th!

We now have the house of our dreams and it’s even better than we ever imagined… because of our determination and actions, not our thoughts or believing we were in the elusive vortex.

In the end, life’s timing was better for us than our timing.

If you aren’t getting what you want, it may not be the right time for you to have it or it’s not what you actually need, and it’s often out of your control.

Learning to surrender to life and having faith is something we all need to learn, particularly when something really matters.

LOA can rob you of that learning, keeping you stuck in guilt and shame, feeling that you are doing something wrong, and perpetuating the pattern you most want to change.

It’s not about always getting what you want or feeling good. Just like my article about Medical Medium, be discerning and don’t give your power away to people who say they are channeling the truth from a higher power. They may just be “channeling” things they have heard before.

Read how Ester Hicks came to channel Abraham in Be Scofield’s article here.

Abraham Hicks has made The Law of Attraction popular for personal development like Anthony Williams, the Medical Medium, has made juicing and the raw food diet popular for healing. Even though the LOA and the raw food diet have been around for at least 70 years. Hicks and Williams are both self-proclaimed “channels” of well established information.

If something is not working, it may not be your fault, but it is your responsibility to do something about it.

That said, I do experience magic often. When we moved into our house, I was completely overwhelmed after a month of purging, organizing, selling, packing, and moving between 3 houses. Plus, we bought a very small house with no closets or shelves so our stuff was everywhere. I broke down and told Doug that I had to hire someone to help me organize our house ASAP. We ran into the perfect woman for the job that same night who I hired on the spot!

That magic and grace is always available to us, and in every difficult situation there are valuable lessons for us to learn, and what actually comes to us can be better than what we thought we wanted.

The journey to our dream home came with so many obstacles. We’re selling our house in Atlanta where the market just took a major downturn. We went from thinking we were going to have a big chunk of money for our new life in Costa Rica, to now facing going into some debt.

Thank GOD we don’t believe in the LOA or Abraham Hicks! I can only imagine the pain we would feel if we believed that we brought this upon ourselves. We didn’t do anything wrong, we didn’t attract debt. We feel like millionaires in our new house and the debt is so worth it.

We trust life.

Life gives us what we need for growth.

You are not a failure if you are in pain or aren’t getting what you want. If you are in pain, listen to it, don’t try to “shift it”… because as you know, thinking better thoughts doesn’t work, and when you try this approach, you miss out on what the pain is trying to tell you. It takes a lot of hard work and action to get to a place of joy and ease, and even then, this ease isn’t free of obstacles. But ease can exist in the face of obstacles.

I would love to hear what you think about LOA.
