You may associate the word DETOX with a late night infomercial promising a new slimmer, sexier, more energized you; all for $19.95! However, the truth is that detoxing is a natural part of human physiology. We have an innate intelligence that knows how to identify and eliminate toxins as a part of daily living. This innate detox system works so much better when we consciously choose to decrease the toxic burden we place on our body. It also works much better when we live a lifestyle that supports natural detoxification including optimal nutrition, exercise, thoughts, and nervous system function.
The main players in natural detoxification are the liver, kidneys, and skin. Every tissue, organ, and cell in the body gets its commands from the central nervous system. The detox organs are no exception. Our brain, brainstem and spinal cord make up the central nervous system and then branch into countless nerve fibers that carry messages from the brain to the body part. When we encounter a toxin, the brain sends signals via the nerves to tell the body to trap, process, or eliminate the toxin.
Our central nervous system is located in our skull and spine. Misalignments of the spinal vertebrae, called subluxations, create stress on the nerves exiting between the associated vertebrae. Nerve stress can decrease the function of the attached organ or tissue. Nerve stress can also decrease the body’s healing potential and cause lingering symptoms or illness.
When subluxations are corrected through chiropractic care, the nerve signals are restored allowing our bodies to heal naturally. Optimal nerve control supports detoxification through enhanced communication between the brain and the detox system.
